I was born in 1977 in Onagawa, Japan, and I am a photographer and storyteller, based in Tokyo. I hold a B.A. in Photography from Nihon University College of Art. My work focuses on transforming personal pain and collective memory into photographic narratives. My family has a deep history in photography, with a studio founded by my grandfather in Onagawa in 1930. On March 11, 2011, a tsunami destroyed 70% of my hometown, claiming the lives of 10% of its population, including my parents. This tragedy inspired me to become a photography artist, using images to tell stories and preserve lives. My photobook The Restoration Will was awarded Best International Photography Book of the Year by Photo España in 2018. My exhibition Répliques 11/03/11 was also held at Espace Van Gogh during Les Rencontres d'Arles 2024. I am currently working on a project titled Layers of Time: Tracing the Memories of Onagawa, which focuses on my hometown. The project observes more than a decade of recovery plans after the tsunami and expresses “Change” and “Lost” from the perspective of a successor to my family’s photo studio.
